This programme will provide you with the extensive knowledge and experience in the fundamental principles of engineering, whilst giving you confidence and supporting your personal development.

Our aim is to inspire the next generation of Engineers and Technicians – From this our 4-year Advanced Apprenticeship programme has been designed to develop a wide array of technical and non-technical skills. This programme will provide you with the extensive knowledge and experience in the fundamental principles of engineering, whilst giving you confidence and supporting your personal development.

Your first year of study will be spent at our training centre, the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC), Located on the campus of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), where you will complete the foundation skills Level 2 training, as well as starting the Level 3 knowledge based diploma. An outline of the modules you will be studying during the first year are as follows:

  • Design drawing
  • Robotics
  • Business improvement techniques
  • Hand fitting
  • Fluid power
  • Mathematics for engineering
  • Electrical/mechanical principles
  • Electronic assembly
  • Electrical wiring
  • Milling
  • Turning
  • Metrology (measurement)
  • Health and safety

Years 2 to 4 you will work within our MTC workshop collaborating with Leading Technicians, Engineers and Scientists who are responsible for delivering challenging research projects to help drive the UK manufacturing industry forward. Our workshop team work closely together and will be on hand to train and support you through this journey.

Alongside this you will be returning to AMTC on a block release basis to finish the level 3 Advanced Diploma. An apprenticeship at the MTC offers you a unique opportunity to explore a range of technology areas to explore such as:

  • Product design
  • CAD
  • Science of Materials and Metallurgy
  • Intelligent Automation and robotics
  • Polymer and Metal 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing
  • Laser Processing
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Subtractive Manufacturing – CNC

Desired Qualifications

5 x GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above including:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Study of an engineering based subject would be advantageous

Future prospects

 Upon successful completion of the end point assessment, apprentices will be awarded a certificate for the Engineering Technician Advanced level 3 diploma, in Product Design and Development Apprenticeship, and EngTech Accreditation with the professional body, and potentially Chartership.

Being a Technical Member of a professional body such as EngTech, is a professionally recognised level of competence that is respected and come with benefits of the awarding body, such as Post-Nominals.

The Level 3 Apprenticeship completion will meet the entry criteria for the apprentice to progress onto level 4 or equivalent HNC course, or a Level 6 B.Eng. (Hons) Degree course.
